Share-A-Toy Project

OVERVIEW
One of the four pillars of The Girls’ Brigade is social development of the girl. As GBM reaches 70 years in existence in Malaysia, we want to be able to contribute to the growth of other children who may be disadvantaged or at-risk by sharing a toy with them.
METHOD
This project is initiated at a central level (GBM). Implementation is carried out at local company level. The company will arrange for collection, processing/packaging and distribution of toys. For impact, all GB companies will carry out this project at the same time, but on their own: near Children’s Day, 11 October 2008 (Saturday)
MISSION
The mission of Share-A-Toy is to raise awareness of the needs of disadvantaged or at-risk children in the country. GOAL: The primary goal of Share-A-Toy is to deliver, through a toy, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into happy and responsible citizens.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of Share-A-Toy are - to help needy children throughout Malaysia experience the joy of hope; - to unite all GB members and their local churches and communities in a common cause during the toy collection and distribution campaign; - to raise public awareness of GB activities.
ACTIVITIES

Company Level

Toy Distribution: This is the process of obtaining and delivering toys. Toys are those donated/bought by the girls themselves or by churches or the local community.

  • - Announcement /Publicity of project to members, church, school, local community -
  • Identify target recipient of toys – orphanage, special home, orang asli/tribal villages, hospital, street ministry, etc -
  • Collection – where, when, how -
  • Processing the toys – cleaning, repairing, categorising, packaging -
  • Storage -
  • Delivery -
  • Accompanying program on delivery of toys

Central (GBM) Level

Support: This involves arranging the creation, publication, and delivery of an array of promotion and support materials like posters, brochures, letters, etc.

Education: This activity is designed to give the local community and the general public a clear understanding of benefits to individuals, communities and the nation from Share-A-Toy. It increases visibility and name recognition of GB and stimulates the public to action in Share-A-Toy. The campaign may include distributing news release, distributing TV and radio public service announcements, publishing newsletters, arranging media events and appearances, conducting special events, maintaining a website and distributing educational material about Share-A-Toy to the general public.

An Example
The officers and leaders of 1st Klang Girls’ Brigade decide that they want to participate in this programme and have targetted a Children’s Home in a Kampung outside Klang. They will collect used, but clean and presentable, toys, from the girls and their families, school friends, church members and the local community. People can bring their recycled toys to the church hall at a specified period of time (e.g. month of August). After the collection, the officers will teach the girls to process – clean, repair, package – the toys (September) and store in a suitable place before distribution (October 11). The leaders plan a day’s programme to visit the Home, bringing the toys and cheer the children. Debriefing: after the programme, have a time with the GB and reflect on how the activity has affected them.

BIBLE
BASE

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22

A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15:13

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9As it is written:
“He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”

10Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 12This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
