GIRLS’ BRIGADE MALAYSIA
65TH ANNIVERSARY MOTOR CRUISE, 2003
This event was organised by the Girls’ Brigade
Malaysia in conjunction with its 65th
Anniversary. We had girls, officers and their
families, church members, Boys’ Brigade some
TCFers as well, all in all 78 participants in 20
cars, some coming from as far as Sarawak.
The Motor Cruise lasted 5 days, from 31 May to 4
June 2003. It started with the Opening Ceremony
in Kuala Lumpur on May 31 officiated by Yg
Berhormat Dr Ron Tan Kee Kwong, Deputy Minister
of Land & Cooperative Development, followed by a
briefing and collection of Treasure Hunt kit.
The Treasure Hunt proper started with a flag off
from the Bukit Jalil Car Park, Kuala Lumpur on
June 1st at 8.30 a.m. on a route which covered
Teluk Intan, Kampar, Ipoh, East-West Highway,
Kota Baru, Kuantan and back to Kuala Lumpur for
the Grand Prize Giving on June 4th at 4.00 p.m
at the Sri Petaling Hotel. The Closing Ceremony
was graced by Bishop Dr Peter Chio, of the
Methodist Church. Overnight stops were made at
the Casuarina Hotel, Ipoh, Square Point Hotel,
Kota Baru and Grand Continental Hotel, Kuantan.
Basically it was a driving holiday with a
Treasure Hunt thrown in. That was the fun.
Points were collected for each leg of the Hunt.
Participants accumulated their points from each
leg for the Grand Prize. Even though the top
prizes were very attractive carrots for
participation, eventually everyone was a winner
because each had gained something and precious
memories were to be cherished.
Organizing a big event like this is very
exciting. We had committed it to the Lord and
our objectives were clear and they included fun,
excitement, fellowship, enjoying the treasures
of our own country and God’s goodness and
blessings to us. Despite times of anxiety,
especially with the SARS situation, God’s hand
of providence is evident and His faithfulness
never ends. When it was all over, we really
thank God for His Protection over each member
that had gone on that nearly 1600 km route and
came out in one piece praising the Lord. For
some it was the first time driving such a long
distance on their own; for many it was the first
time on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia;
for most it was shopping at every stop and every
car was loaded with goods from coffee and
peanuts in Perak to batik and keropok in
Trengganu by the end of 5 days.
By the end of the motor cruise, we were all
exhausted and exhilarated at the way God has
blessed us. He has put us in a beautiful country
on our pilgrimage home to heaven. This country
is bountiful with a variety of cultures and
traditions and natural beauty. We are to
treasure this wealth that He has provided for us
as a good steward. Personally, I have
tremendously enjoyed organising the hunt. As
William, Choy Ying and I, the Treasure Hunt
committee proper went round to set the route and
clues, I discovered that I had to dig deep into
the recesses of my closet of skills to come up
with little riddles and poems to tickle the
brains of the participants. Our team work pulled
us through.
To God be the Glory Great Things He has done!
